Here’s a clean ladder version:
Layer 1 — The gag – What you think this is
Immediate humor. Visual or verbal punchline.
Layer 2 — Irony – Why it feels slightly wrong
Situation contradicts expectation.
Layer 3 — Social satire – Oh this is about me?
Commentary on behavior, trends, institutions.
Layer 4 — Meta satire – Structure behind the absurd
Commentary on belief systems, narratives, identity, power structures — the frameworks behind behavior.
Layer 5 — Reflexive / existential satire – You were in it the whole time
Now the piece also questions:
-
the joke itself; the storyteller; the audience’s need for meaning; the absurdity of trying to “solve” reality through narrative.
It leaves a faint aftertaste of: “We’re all inside the same machine — including this joke.”
Old MAD magazine at its sharpest did this. Firesign Theatre definitely did. Some of Gary Larson’s darkest panels flirted with it. It’s humor that knows it’s humor — and uses that awareness as part of the message.
There will be a pop-quiz on this later this week. Not notes!
Next week, we further identify if it’s Horatian vs. Juvenalian
Class dismissed…
